Social Marketing Etiquette for Small Businesses

Proper etiquette is required to make your social marketing a success. Without following the guidelines, you can turn off potential customers and lose the opportunity to build online networking ties. Simply follow a few rules of etiquette as you are engaging in the online world of networking, and your marketing will be a success.

Find the right social network for your target audience
There are a large number of social networking sites. Each has a demographic that it draws in. Check out your options before you begin your social marketing and find a social networking site that best suits your brand.

Bring in traffic with means other than spam
Spam is not acceptable to any social networking community. It is unattractive and will annoy potential customers. There are plenty of ethical alternatives to spam for reaching out to your audience. For instance, check out some sponsorship opportunities at  your social marketing sites for a highly accepted and highly effective networking tool.

Create an environment for open conversation
Successful social marketing requires a give and take conversation. This, of course, means that you will get negative comments, but keep in mind that this is fine within reason and will not tarnish your image. The way you respond to negative feedback will determine how your are perceived. Some moderation is necessary to create a comfortable environment, so don’t be afraid to sensor either.

Be open and honest
Social marketing is about upfront and honest communication. Your followers will not accept being lied to. Be sure that you are not trying to deceive your readers to make yourself look better. A genuine approach will always win over your audience.

Play down the self advertising and play up your expertise
If your social networking entries are blatant advertisements, then you will turn away your audience instead of drawing them in. A better use of your page would be to give advice about your area of business. Sharing what you know is generous, and it demonstrates your knowledge of your product or service.

Only include links that will benefit your followers
Adding links and ads to your page can be a good method of advertising. However, a link that is not related to your site is a waste of space. Your audience will be frustrated by too many links that are not beneficial to them. Make sure all of your links are related and will help out your audience.

Remember, choose the right social networking community to be a part of and then build a page that encourages open and respectful communication. Soon, you will see great results from your social marketing efforts and become a well-known company on the web.
